GSA selects three for world champions in July

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has selected a three-member team to represent Guyana at the swimming World Championships in July in Barcelona, Spain.
Making the team after a March 30 time-trials were Earlando McRae, marking a return to the international scene after a four year hiatus from the pool, two-time Olympian Niall Roberts and Brittany Van Lange, one-time Olympian.
Speaking with vice president (technical) of GASA Dr Karen Pilgrim said she expects the swimmers to give of their best and improve their times at the event.
“It’s a good team, to have Orlando back and Niall there together I think will bring out the best in each other.
“It will be a tough task for them but I know they will give of their best and we expect them to improve on their times,” Pilgrim stated via telephone with Guyana Times International Sport.
Pilgrim also believes that the return of McRae is definitely good for local swimming as the swimmer is one of the most talented the country has to offer.
“It’s been over three years (McRae’s absence) but I think (McRae’s return) is good for the sport, after the under-15 age group a lot of swimmers tend to focus on exams and after that jobs, so his return gives us a swimmer of high calibre and an example to the younger swimmer…just to have competition back in the open category will be good for the sport,” the official emphasised.
Meanwhile, according to Dr Pilgrim the team has committed to training assiduously for the prestigious event in July after a meeting on Sunday.
Newly elected president of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Christopher Matthias, and his deputy Ivan Persaud will undergo their first major assignment today (Wednesday), as they head to Panama for an important Congress.
